The Ti'Shan Incident, named after the Ceti scoutship that was involved, took place in the Altair System. A flight of aerostar fighters from New Earth, led by then-Maj. Jeanette Duveaux, engaged the Ti'Shan shortly after it arrived in the system and disabled its power plant, preventing the crew from destroying their ship. Terran Defense Force Marines under the command of Capt. Kalis Hansen boarded the scout, under Hansen's orders to "waste the bastards," and fought their way to the ship's command center. After they completed the boarding operation, Hansen and her marines tortured some of the still- living Ceti, ripping off their wings and cauterizing the wounds with lasers.

Minutes after the TDF Marines assumed control of the Ti'Shan, a Ceti cruiser responded to the scout's automated distress signal, forcing Hansen's platoon to evacuate the ship. The cruiser recovered the Ti'Shan and her crew, a few of whom survived. Ceti Adepts recovered the victims' memories of the attack and determined that Hansen commanded the platoon. They did not have her name, but they etched her face into the Ceti's racial memory and dubbed her "Wingburner."

A board of officers reviewed the Marines' actions after debreifing. A subsequent investigation cleared her of war crimes charges but found her negligent in maintaining the good order and discipline of her troops. The board stripped her of command, and Admiral Tenaka assigned her to xenozoology research on New Earth. The Ceti government placed a rich bounty on Hansen's head -- attached or otherwise.
